Brazil-based data center services company Ascenty has started building its second data center in the country in Hortolândia, São Paulo.

The new facility will receive an investment of 150m Brazilian reais (more than US$74m) and is expected to be inaugurated by the end of 2013.

Ascenty CEO Chris Torto said the 5,000 sq m building will have space to accommodate 900 racks of equipment and will be the most modern in the country in terms of infrastructure, equipment and processes.

"We will build a 20MVA substation to have power available, with a density of 10KW per rack, one of the highest in the country," Torto said.

Ascenty’s Campinas data center opened in October last year. Both facilities have been designed to offer three types of services to customers: cloud computing, colocation and managed hosting.

"The market demand for these services has increased significantly in the country and we are preparing to meet it," Torto says.

"The first step in this direction was the expansion of Campinas unit, which should be completed in May."

Torto said the new project is being built to an Uptime Institute Tier III certification standard. IT will have a redundant power distribution system in terms of components, server racks and network elements.

"A rotary UPS (uninterruptible power supply) system will ensure uninterrupted power in case of power failure," says Philip Knight, director of data center infrastructure Ascenty.

"In addition to greater efficiency and safety in operation, this system eliminates the use of lead-acid batteries, which are one of the biggest polluters of the environment worldwide."

The cooling system will consist of high capacity and efficient air and water chiller, providing an availability of 3,600 tons of refrigeration (TR) of cold water.

The data center will be connected to Hortolândia Campinas through a optical fiber network as well as Ascenty’s main data center in the country.
