American colocation provider Webair plans to upgrade its New York 1 data center over the next four years.

The upgrades at the Long Island facility are expected to cost $20 million, with the investment driven by Webair’s recent acceptance into the New York Empire State Development (ESD) program and allocation of 1MW of hydropower from New York Power Authority’s (NYPA’s) ReCharge NY program.

The site was originally opened in 2011 with 50,000 sq ft (4,645 sq m) of data center space, but will now see some expansion.

Upgrades include a third generator and additional UPS and HVAC capacity to support another 1MW of critical IT load; another 200 high-density cabinets and corresponding containment and DCIM systems; and expansion of NY1’s meet-me-room, including the physical presence of interconnection fabrics such as PacketFabric and MegaPort.

“As an owner-operated New York-based company, Webair has made considerable investments in personnel and infrastructure at our NY1 facility to continue supporting our customers for the next 20 years and beyond,” Michael Christopher Orza, CEO of Webair, said.

“Our services are relied upon by many New York State-owned organizations. As a result, the State has provided Webair with tax rebates and other incentives to ensure low energy costs and the additional resources we need to grow our ecosystem of private, air-gapped cloud services and address mounting customer demand for managed infrastructure.”
