A new data center park in Taiwan established by Chunghwa Telecom is getting off the ground, with the Taiwanese telco breaking ground on a new US$13bn facility and the Taiwan Stock Exchange breaking ground on a new seven-story colo and cloud facility.

The Banqiao Digital Park is in Taipei’s technology corridor which has strong connectivity and is already home to a number of technology companies.

TWSE’s data center will cover 28,647 sq m. Three floors of the facility will sit underground.

The building has been designed with energy efficiency in mind and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) technology is being built in to ensure operational efficiency is maximized, TWSE said.

Power will be supplied through two substations run by the Taiwan Power Company and a 2N redundancy set up will be used throughout.

The building has also been designed to be earthquake resistant to shocks up to magnitude 7 and will be built on higher ground to ensure there is no risk of flood.

TWSE features 8211 listed companies and in May had a daily trade volume of about 3m orders and 746,087 transactions.

It will use this facility to provide IT related services to entities trading in its markets, including colocation and cloud computing services.

Chunghwa’s new cloud data center
Chunghwa Telecom is also using its land to build a new Tier IV cloud computing data center at an estimated cost of NT$13bn.

The data center is being built on a 21,482 sq m site, with a total floor space as storeys are added of 88,574 sq m.

Chunghwa Telecom told Focus Taiwan that the data center will be completed in 2015.

It has also been designed with an anti-seismic structure design capable of resisting earthquakes at magnitude 7 and will use an Intelligent Energy Management Cloud Platform developed by Chunghwa Telecom for automatic environment monitoring.

It said it is aiming for a power usage effectiveness rating of 1.5 or below.
