DigitalOcean has chosen Equinix’ International Business Exchange data centers in Singapore (SG2) to support its expansion into the Asia Pacific market.

A cloud service provider that caters to developers, DigitalOcean offers highly-affordable and fast cloud solutions with its use of solid-state drive (SSD) cloud server infrastructure.

This Singapore data center deployment will allow DigitalOcean to provide its existing customers with greater access to the Asian market and offer its cloud hosting services to the growing developer community in the region.

The company is also hoping to access new customers in what it describes as a thriving region.

On this front, its presence in SG2 will serve as a ready gateway to other countries in the region, such as Australia, India, Southeast Asia and Japan.

DigitalOcean is also deployed in Equinix data centers in New York, Silicon Valley.

According to Equinix, the additional Point of Presence here makes it possible for DigitalOcean to significantly reduce latency to 30ms for regional users, compared to the average latency of 200ms if it was connecting via Amsterdam or Silicon Valley.

Clement Goh, the managing director of Equinix South Asia, reiterated that Equinix is looking to build itself up as a cloud platform of choice, and does not seek to be a cloud service provider.

“We want to be a cloud platform of choice, and not as a cloud service provider,” Goh said.

“We are clear that we want to be a specialist in terms of providing a cloud platform. This gives service provider the confidence that we are a partner.”

Goh also shared an update about the company’s upcoming SG3 data center in Singapore.

“The construction is coming up pretty well,” Goh said.

“We should see the whole construction up by end of the year.”

Given that Equinix’s SG1 data center is currently at full utilization, the completion of SG3 will allow current customers to expand and grow, as well as offer ample capacity for new customers.

SG3 is expected to be operational in Q1 of 2015.
