Baidu, Tencent and China Telecom get busy

Large Chinese search engine Baidu has launched plans for its Yangquan cloud computing data center.

The new data center will be built in four years, with Phase one covering 120,000 sq m.

Once complete, the data center will provide a storage capacity of more than 4000PB, which is 200,000 times of the storage capacity of the National Library of China.

By using high performance and energy saving servers developed by Baidu itself, the data center will have a total of 700,000 CPUs with more than 3m CPU cores. It is said that the data center can save about 43% of its energy use using technologies consistent with environmental regulation in China.

Tencent builds a new Shanghai data center

Tencent, one of the largest internet players of China, signed an investment cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Qingpu Industrial Park for a new cloud computing data center and e-business Base.

Once built, Tencent said the new data center will be one of the most advanced cloud computing and cloud storage infrastructure service platforms in Asia, serving internet users and third party-enterprises.

Covering more than six hectares, the cloud computing center will provide more than 4,000 racks accommodating about 100,000 servers. It will offer connections of 100Gb.

Tencent has also signed an agreement with China Telecom to build its Qingpu data center, providing support in both data center construction and support during operation.

Sources from China Telecom said the new data center will use advanced modular data center technologies, effective energy saving technologies and new generation hardware technologies, with the aim of obtaining the capability of running huge number of applications.

China Telecom now has a total of 1.1TB of internet bandwidth and is capable of hosting more than 13,000 racks, both of which are expected to be doubled in the next five years.

    We understood that Ecologic Data was a proposal for a data center in Ireland that experienced difficulties in the planning process. If there is more to say about it now, we'd be interested to give the story some more space here.
