2010 Winner: Telecity Group
2009 Winner: Morgan Stanley - The HDC efficiency program

The current drive towards greater energy efficiency in the data centre industry will put additional pressure on owners and operators to bring their existing facilities up to scratch, in particular those facilities designed and fitted before power consumption became a critical issue. Since it is not possible to manage what isn't measured, the focus on energy efficiency has gone hand in hand with the evolution of metrics with which to measure such efficiency and its trends within a facility over time. These are the category of metrics which the Green Grid have assisted in developing and have endorsed. While considerably advanced in a relatively short period of time there is still much debate about the measurement of data centre consumption and productivity, its reliability, standardisation and application. This Award seeks to recognise the journey that individual organisations have undergone in order to bring existing facilities up to scratch through the process of measurement, benchmarking, analysis, recommendation and implementation. Innovation may lie in the development of a measurement model that meets accurately the particular facility needs, the identification of opportunities and/or the introduction of technologies, management techniques and strategies to capitalise on such opportunities.

Data centres eligible to enter will:
  • Be located in the EMEA region
  • Be commissioned originally before 1st July 2008
  • Have undergone or be undergoing an efficiency‐directed programme over a period of at least six months (on either a continual or an interval basis)
  • Have utilised Green Grid metrics and/or research and/or modeling to inform and guide process, paying particular attention to the Green Grid PUE database tool.
  • Have undergone some part of the efficiency improvement programme since 1st September 2010.
Only data centre owners & operators are eligible to receive the Award however vendors, consulting engineers and contractors are welcome to nominate projects on behalf of their clients and assist in the preparation of their entry.

 Judging Criteria and Weightings
  • The use of efficiency modeling and metrics and their adaption to identify and diagnose opportunities for improving energy efficiency within an existing facility (20%)
  • The adoption and implementation of ongoing operational and broader strategic initiatives based on what has been learned from the information‐gathering and analysis stages of the process (20%)
  • The development of solutions, protocols and management procedures to meet efficiency objectives and capitalise on identified improvement opportunities (20%)
  • The integration of metrics and standards into the complex series of IT, M&E interactions that constitute the DC environment as part of a process capable of identifying energy efficiency on an ongoing and continuous basis (20%)
  • The capability of the project to act as an example of best practice to other organisations looking to develop efficiency strategies for their facilities based on the measurement of efficiency and the identification of opportunity (20%).

Industry Awards can range from the glitz and glamour of the Oscars to the ‘Best Dressed Traffic Warden’ but they all share the same underlying human motivational base – peer recognition. When the ‘industry’ is outside of the public arena and specialised, like our very own ‘data centre’ world, the competition for (and industry recognition of) an award – both by peers and potential customers (but always ‘people’) becomes far more personal and coveted. That is what has happened to the Datacentre Leaders' Awards – they have become our industries Oscars, the most coveted of all gongs. Not the only kid on the block but the best.
