Latin American telecommunications provider America Movil has commenced work on its largest data center yet for the region, a US$110m 27,000 sq m facility near Santiago, Chile.

The company already has more than 11 technology centers in Latin America and the Claro data center will be linked into America’s Movil’s extensive regional network.

Claro Chile director of enterprise markets Sergio Morales said the data center will feature the latest infrastructure and will adhere to the latest safety rules and redundancy for power and security, with Chile being known as a zone of high seismic activity.

A redundant energy supply, including two joint power feeds of 12MVA, will allow for 96 hours of emergency energy. These systems will be heavily monitored, with energy management systems and environmental control also being added to the build.

The network will also be built in a redundant manner, with multiple independent routes of access and redundancy also added inside of the data center for communications.

It is being built on a plot covering 70,000 sq m to a Tier IV standard, and will eventually be certified by the Uptime institute.

The new Claro data center will make America Movil one of the leading technology providers in Chile, once it is complete next year, according to the company.

America Movil plans to bring the data center online in phases, with the first instalment, representing 25% of the build, coming online by the end of next year.
