A major European carrier-hotel operator has entered the US market by acquiring a large facility on the east coast. The building that houses the Long Island Data and Recovery Center in Westbury, N.Y., now belongs to Frankfurt, Germany-based ancotel GmbH.

The property has an existing 4,000 sq ft data center floor, with room to build an additional 45,000 sq ft, Dan Lunde, ancotel's VP of business development, said. The total current power capacity is about 2 MW and more will be added as the site is built out. Very little of the currently functional data center floor is vacant, with only about eight racks left, according to Lunde.

The company will offer the same portfolio of services at the new site as it does at its other facilities, including colocation, interconnection and meet-me room services, Lunde said.

The location worked well for ancotel because of the six submarine-cable landing stations on Long Island and because all major fiber lines on the island run down Old Country Road, along which the carrier hotel is located. The site is the easternmost carrier hotel in the New York metropolitan area.

The deal was closed in the early days of June, said John Reynolds, a managing director at ancotel. The company did not disclose the price of the acquisition.

ancotel is evaluating options to expand its US reach further but no definite plans have been made public. "We are thinking about it but now, the first step is  to establish in Long Island," said K-J Orth, chief marketing officer for ancotel USA.

The company's flagship facility is in Frankfurt, Germany. The site hosts infrastructure of about 4,000 carriers ÔÇô with about 30,000 interconnections ÔÇô making it one of the most important carrier hotels in continental Europe. "It's the gateway between eastern and western Europe," Orth said.

"The idea  is now to create the same concept here in Long Island, like a gateway between Europe and North America."

The company also has facilities in London and Hong Kong.
