Bluestone and AdaptivCool go exclusive on Northeast data center efficiency projects

Partners to help data centers in two utilities’ territories get efficiency rebates
(12/1/2009)

Bluestone Energy, the US engineering firm that focuses on helping companies increase energy efficiency in their facilities (including data centers) has solidified its partnership with cooling solution provider AdaptivCool with an exclusive agreement to work on energy efficiency projects in data centers that result in utility rebates.

The partners will initially focus on coverage areas of National Grid – a utility that provides electricity and natural gas in several northeastern states – and the Westwood, Mass.-based utility Nstar. The companies have been working together on similar projects since March and Tuesday’s announcement solidifies the partnership and makes it exclusive.

“We have the right to use the (AdaptivCool) product for energy conservation projects where utility incentive money is involved for those regions,” Bluestone VP of Engineering and Business Development Adam Fairbanks said. “It’s exclusive in the National Grid and Nstar territories.”

He added that the two firms expected to expand with similar agreements into other utilities’ territories in the future. Since the beginning of their relationship in March, Bluestone and AdaptivCool have completed data center energy efficiency projects that achieved utility rebates for six companies, Fairbanks said.

One of the most recent ones was a Cambridge, Mass., data center of a biotech company, where Bluestone installed AdaptivCool’s system of floor trays and fans that allowed for more cooling capacity in specific spots within the facility where it is needed, instead of bringing the entire facility’s temperature down.

While the localized cooling solution and betterment of overall air-flow management is a centerpiece of Bluestone’s energy efficiency projects, the company implements other methods, including increasing chiller efficiency, free cooling and air-side economizers where possible.
