Each PowerHouse system includes a standby generator, a flywheel UPS, switchgear, cooling and monitoring systems, packaged in repeatable 20-foot or 40-foot container configurations
Data center power back-up solutions provider Active Power announced having sold three of its all-in-one containerized power and cooling systems in two deals worth a total of about $5 million. The deployment brings total capacity deployed to date via the containerized platform to more than 20 MW, Active Power spokesman Lee Higgins said.
Active Power sold the systems to containerized data center providers for two of their end-user clients. The vendor was not able to disclose who the providers or the end-users were.
One of the three PowerHouse systems sold was rated at 240 KW and the other two were rated at 480 KW each, according to the vendor’s statement. The company expects to ship the systems to several U.S. locations before the end of the year.
Each of the containers contains a standby generator, an Active Power CleanSource UPS, a generator starting module, switchgear and a chiller. The 240 KW system contains a 300 kVA UPS and each of the 480 KW containers’ UPS systems is 600 kVA. Active Power UPS systems are based on the company’s flywheel technology, allowing for significant space savings and increased tolerance for higher temperatures, Higgins said.
It takes Active Power about 16 weeks to build a containerized system to a customer’s specifications. The supplier does all the necessary testing before the product is shipped.
With PowerHouse systems, the vendor aims to meet demand created by increased deployment of containerized data center equipment. Active Power says the solution allows for quicker deployment and reduced operational and capital expenses than those associated with the traditional approach of adding back-up power capacity in a data center that is scaling up.
Most of the aforementioned capacity sold to date had been deployed in European and Asia Pacific markets.
