Next Generation Data has started the first build out at its mega data center in Wales
The company said it was a milestone to get to this stage as it had no idea it was heading for a credit crunch and a recession when the project began just over two years ago.
Nick Razey, CEO at Next Generation Data describes the site, which was originally built as a semiconductor plant which was never commissioned, is ’30 data centers under one roof.’
 Maximum security
The site is owned by the Government of Wales which acts as landlord to NGD.
Razey said: ‘Among NGD Europe’s many unique features is a high capacity power supply direct from the super grid as well as on-site high-speed, low latency fibre connections from the major telecoms carriers. Inside the massive three-floor 75,000 sq mt building there are a number of separate data halls of varying sizes available all with independent services, resilient power supply and cooling systems.’
‘Its been a two year process to get to this point. When we started we had no idea we were going to enter a credit crunch.’
The site is being pitched as a ‘space and power’ play.
‘It is a different proposition compared with London and the M25. In space and power we have much more. Outside we have 25m clearance and a 4m high security fence. In power terms a lot of data centers won’t take more than 4kW, we can manage 60kW to the rack. So price wise we have the economies of scale and the real estate is a site that is flexible but ratified to tier 3 at 40% below the price of the M25 market.'
Razey said the first client is currently being rolled in. “We’re saying we’re in the build phase with the first customer going in. Each data hall has its own ME infrastructure – the only thing that is shared is the two high voltage feeds.'
'Ours is a wholesale play, we are not in the retail market of offering a rack or two.'
NGD is targeting the enterprise and government markets. 'The government is always especially interested in security...our direct connectio to the grid - the substation is 1KM away - means we have a massive 180 MVA on tap when London locations are already struggling to find any more than 5-10 MVA. We have triple skinned walls, bomb proff glass, prison grade perimeter fencing and ex-special forces security guards.'
 NGD's Razey
Going forward Razey said that while he and NGD were focused on the build out, a number of projects that had been on hold 'are coming back onto the table...including one that is enormous.'
'Our pipeline is looking very interesting.'
