Intel partnered up with three French institutions to create a laboratory that will work on developing systems whose thousand-times the computing power of the world's fastest supercomputers.
The Exascale Computing Research Center will be funded by Intel's investment of several million Euros over three years and a matching contribution from the French Atomic Energy Commission, the Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University and the French National High-Performance Computing Agency.
“France has taken a leading role in driving high-performance computing research in Europe," Steve Pawlowski, senior fellow and general manager of Intel Architecture Group's central architecture and planning, said in a statement. “We chose to work with these three organizations because of their world-class software competency in exascale and high- performance computing.”
One of the center's main focuses will be integration of multi-petaFLOPS systems, developing advanced performance optimization techniques, and collaborating with end users to optimize supercomputer performance in areas of energy, seismology, computational fluid dynamics, health care and others.
Also this week, Intel Capital (the chip-maker's investment arm) announced seven new investments into a variety of technology companies based in the US, Asia and the Middle East. The investments total about $25 million.
One of the companies is Sausalito, Calif.-based cloud-based service provider Joyent. The company offers infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and cloud management software. Its clients include ABC Disney, CNN, The Gap, Facebook, LinkedIn and Yahoo!
