Global Switch to build second data centre in Paris

IBM signs on for long tenure as anchor tenant
(10/20/2009)

Global Switch signed IBM for the pre-letting of technical space in its new data centre development at Clichy in Paris.

The firm is about to break ground on the site following the award of the building environmental planning permission in the last month. IBM is expected to take up to half of the six floor facility of 17,000sqm.
It has been designed with a base power density of 1.5kW/m2 (with the flexibility to be adapted for high density environments as required). It will be a minimum of Tier III throughout.

The build is planned to take 19 months and the facility is expected to become fully operational during 2011.

‘We’re just breaking ground, all the planning is done and with IBM we have an anchor customer in place. This makes IBM our largest customer by revenue in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Paris and Sydney,’ Jason Silver, Global Switch’s EMEA group marketing and sales director told DatacenterDynamics.

John Corcoran, Global Switch’s Executive Chairman commented: “With the new Paris 2 data centre Global Switch now owns and operates nine carrier neutral Tier 3 enhanced facilities across Europe and Asia Pacific. We are continuing to experience strong customer demand in all our facilities and I am pleased and very proud to announce that IBM, the world’s largest Information Technology Company, has extended its commitment with Global Switch in Paris. This will further strengthen our strategic relationship.“

The new facility (Paris 2) will be built on an adjacent site to the existing Global Switch facility in Paris to create the city’s leading data centre campus with in excess of 50,000sqm of space.

Silver said the design will incorporate the inclusion of free cooling options as part of a broader environmental impact programme that is being instigated across the Global Switch group.
