Santa Clara data center earns LEED Gold certification
Digital Realty Trust facility uses air side economization

The U.S. Green Building Council has issued LEED-CI Gold certification to a Digital Realty Trust data center in Santa Clara, Calif.
Key to certification of the facility at 1500 Space Park is its use of air side economization, or using low-temperature outside air to cut on HVAC power costs.
“Northern California has a climate that makes airside economization an important tool for increasing energy efficiency in datacenters, making it a natural fit for 1500 Space Park,” DRT’s Chief Technology Officer Jim Smith said in a statement.
The facility’s PUE rating was measured at 1.51 during the commissioning process, according to the statement. Currently, DRT has 10 more data center projects in the LEED certification process.
“The LEED certification program provides a valuable model for developing data centers in ways that are energy efficient as well as sustainable in terms of materials (and) re-use of existing structural elements and other critical areas,” Smith said.
