Gartner: HP retains leading position in server market

IBM reports highest revenues from server sales, however
(11/30/2009)

HP shipped the biggest amount of servers in the third quarter of 2009, ahead of all leading server vendors, while IBM retained its lead in quarterly server revenue, according to a recent report by IT industry analysts at market research firm Gartner.

As of third quarter’s end, HP controlled 32.1 percent of the market (in terms of server shipments), followed by Dell’s 22.8 percent, IBM’s 12.8 percent, Fujitsu’s 3.5 percent and Sun’s 2.6 percent. Other smaller vendors shared the remaining 26.2 percent. (See tables below).

IBM’s leading server-related revenues during the quarter stood at about $3.38 billion. HP was second, reporting revenues of about $3.22 billion, followed by Dell, Sun, Fujitsu and what Gartner classifies as “other vendors,” in that order.

The analysts placed total server market size at about $10.66 billion. While the figures represented shrinkage from the same quarter last year, it was an improvement from the second quarter of this year.

“It is important to put the yearly declines into perspective,” Gartner’s Research VP Jeffrey Hewitt said in a statement.

“Looking at the third quarter results from the sequential perspective, they showed an increase of 13.8 percent in shipments and 10.2 percent in revenues when compared to the second quarter of this year. That suggests that the market as a whole is showing signs of stabilization as we move toward the end of 2009.”
