Sabey gets LEED Gold for VMware data center shell and core

Recognition follows tenant’s win of LEED Platinum for the infrastructure within
(1/26/2010)

The core and shell of a building in Washington State built by Sabey and housing a VMware data center has been awarded LEED Gold certification by the US Green Building Council – the body’s second highest recognition for sustainable building and design practices.

The facility that received the award was 188,000 square foot Building B, part of Sabey’s Intergate.Columbia campus in East Wenatchee, Wash. VMware has recently received LEED Platinum certification from the council for improvements it made to critical infrastructure inside the 22 MW data center.

Sabey said it acted as general contractor for both VMware improvements and shell and core of the facility. Among the facility’s energy-efficiency features are deployment of hot aisle containment methodologies, overhead cooling (instead of raised floors) and the use of evaporative air-side economization.

According to Sabey, the cooling system and Washington’s mild climate allow for free cooling 95 percent of the year.

VMware also said in October that the data center was powered solely by hydroelectric power.

The facility is operated by Sabey DataCenter Properties, a new venture Sabey Corp. formed earlier this month after receiving an investment of $100 million from a fund operated by an electricians’ labor union and an interest group that represents electricians.
